in terrorism the good old understands fully that you have to live the. real life stories from. nineteen forty five gold dot com. this is also your check of the headlines at half past the hour. a double suicide blast has rolled through russia's southern republic of dagestan came into office isn't injuring more than twenty people at the time it's near a police station a couple went home just hours after a woman desperate to explode is trying to enter the building. in europe politicians are claiming multiculturalism has failed to even say it presents a potential security threat but is immigrants have time to adjust to a new society they demand solutions instead of think appointing. also egypt's new
11:31 pm
movie tree roots have taken over from hosni mubarak promising new constitution to be decided by referendum soon but protesters who led the uprising against him wait to see the democracy they seek will be limited by western and u.s. interests which binds the alice the dictator. meanwhile the wave of middle east and pressure has has spread to iran while the you are stay devolvement post messages on tweets aimed at starring on the rights. and a revolutionary simulated trip to space tonight and finally reach my goals in a project modeling a trip to the red planet it's part of an experiment aimed at studying the planetary some of that is to one day make this journey reality. as the headline is now the second part of the show is on the way.
11:32 pm
all right it's time for tonight's tool time war now the orange speaker of the house john boehner was on meet the press over the weekend talking about the budget pressing political issues like whether or not obama was born in the united states and host david gregory decided to question boehner about those in the republican party who claim that president obama is not a citizen of the u.s. and that he is a closeted muslim so just take a listen to speaker boehner his response. maybe it's not my job to tell the american people what to think our job in washington this to look for me american people having said that of the state of hawaii has said that he was born there that's good enough for me the president says he's a christian i accept images word. so better doesn't think that it's his responsibility to tell the american people what to do or say you know somehow i just don't believe that i mean congress makes laws that force us to do or think about something every day that would be why like that officials are called leaders
11:33 pm
right you lead the rest will follow they ever heard that line before john or how about the responsibility of politicians to speak the truth to their constituents and boehner is part of the g.o.p. well you know they have this funny habit of trying to regulate tell everyday americans how they're supposed to live you know they're the party of more reality well opinions on abortion who you love and even which church you should attend but apparently baner lacks a spine when it comes to calling out fringe members of the g.o.p. on the berther and the muslim thing he does take the path on that one that's really your ship you can believe it and that's why tonight john boehner is tonight's told time when. now the unrest is spreading across the middle east and africa north africa after days of protests the governments of tunisia and egypt other countries acted quickly to try and prevent a revolution from happening in jordan king up to the second swore in
11:34 pm
a new government last week following anti-government protests the new government now has a mandate for political reform so a protest began in syria the government pulled back from a plan to withdraw some subsidies that keep the cost of living down in the country again for its president also announced election reforms and new laws dealing with the media of those events have happened rather quickly when leaders saw what happened in egypt in tunisia and today we saw more signs of unrest in four other countries iran algeria yemen and bahrain also protests and algeria officials now say that they will lift a twenty year state of emergency in the coming days they acted after anti-government protesters chanting change at the power clashed with security forces in the capital over the week at and behind riot police were deployed to break up protests across the island nation as demonstrators demanded more political freedom and jobs police used tear gas to try and break up these large crowds gathered in several cities in the tiny nation and in iran security forces clashed
11:35 pm
with demonstrators in parts of tehran as thousands reportedly took to the streets so today's street march marked the first major reformist seven straight should since security forces put down widespread protests in december of two thousand and nine and then yemen also saw more protests demonstrators are reportedly being attacked with broken bottles daggers and rocks my several hundred pro government supporters many waving yemeni flags and photos of yemen's president who's been in office for more than thirty years and also happens to be a major ally of the united states now that is just a quick look at all the unrest sweeping the middle east north africa but tonight we're wondering. might the u.s. ever see another revolution on a point of high here anti-government sentiment is growing but is it really bad enough to make people leave their couches and call for real reform always on our table in the garfield out onto the streets of d.c.
11:36 pm
to find out. how a man handled in the past few weeks we've seen uprisings in countries like egypt yemen in tunisia to what americans ever protests like this here we took to the streets to get commanders do you think that any kind of protest like this will ever come to the u.s. anything eventually i think we have to clean up our act we do it all the time it says washington d.c. there's a march on the ball well no but we got to do that we're free to do that we can choose and we vote and we you know we don't like people we vote about so we don't have to stand in the streets and yell and scream to get people out of office just you know go to the poll is there anything that you personally feel strongly about any cause that would make you take to the streets and protest yes there are gay marriage as a gay man myself i am a strong supporter of gay marriage i think that every american should have the basic rights. immigration i think you know fine people want to come to this country that's called your paperwork are there any causes that would bring you to the streets to protest is there anything that you fairly passionate about well. i
11:37 pm
believe that we should have a different type of type of medical system them the health care plan that president obama has put in place i think we should have something that is a real socialized medicine such as and canada and the united kingdom is there anything today right now that you would you would go protest about that you're really passionate about what i think that we have a lot of work to do you know one of two things a few protests in the middle east is. concerned about. that people don't have jobs people don't have economic security and that the poor people will be taken advantage of and i think that something we should all be mine. is there any cause that you personally are really passionate about that you would go and protest about . oh there are many. who want to go into it there are lots of. better place i don't think americans are
11:38 pm
motivated enough or that anything to protest in this kind of numbers is there anything that you're personally motivated enough about that you would go protests. not anything that's if something went wrong yes but there's nothing like that right now so do you think that we could see egypt style of evolution's coming here to the u.s. any time soon i think it's part of the american d.n.a. i think that we take the protests. seriously and that when agitated and angry and impassioned we take to the street she's part of the american lifestyle the way of life maybe if it does come and see you on the streets protesting maybe shot. so although revolution is in this country's blood does i look like anyone's amp definite up enough to have another one. now wisconsin governor scott walker has started a war with public sector unions late last week walker announced that he will
11:39 pm
propose removing nearly all public employee collective bargaining rights with the exception of wages but still the twist and he salary increase could be no more than the consumer price index unless voters in the jurisdiction approve the higher rates now as a warning shot he's also announce of the wisconsin national guard has been alerted and is prepared to respond in the case of any problems that could result and destruction of state services and water claims that this move is necessary step to plug a three point six billion dollars budget hole in the state the labor activists many democrats say this is a calculated political assault on public sector employees even some state republicans in wisconsin are upset saying of the governor is coming across as more of a dictator. and less of a leader so is this tough love but a very necessary move or is this a political war against the working class well joining me to discuss this the motley founder and president of less government and my calculator journalist and contributing editor for in these times thank you both for joining me tonight thank
11:40 pm
you now see i'm going to start with you because i'm curious obviously the governor is painting this as an absolutely necessary step in order to deal with the state's budget woes but how is going to restricting the bargaining rights of labor unions really going to fix you know billions of dollars and it will have a fundamental problem with public sector unions anyway i mean i thought they were terrible and the answer my question ok i will what i'm saying is they've strip mined the state budgets all across the country the main reason these states sure new york california was constant she the ones that continue continuously vote democrat have these horrendous budget deficit is is because they're on the hook for tens and hundreds of billions of dollars to public sector union employees and so they has to do something to address this overwhelming upside down nature of the unions flooding their way through the budget process and collecting all these ridiculous benefits well outside what ninety five percent of the private sector
11:41 pm
who's paying for it gets in their jobs now are they really collecting these absolutely ridiculous crazy benefits that are so much better than anyone who doesn't work for the government enjoys in this country absolutely not the average pension of a public employees nine hundred thousand dollars and they don't receive any social security on top of that and they actually there's been studies have shown time and time again that people that work in the public sector make about four to ten percent worse than what their counterparts do in the private sector now there's argument about pension shortfalls there was a study that came out today by dean baker the center for economic and policy research which showed that had it not been for the housing crash the pensions would have been up to where they were so the problem of this was was the housing crash and it's wall street and let's not get our eyes. to the real culprits of the earth that's a fucking joke you told me that all the states were balanced budgets until two thousand and eight that's absurd second of all your assertion on these numbers is totally made up you're making you want to disagree with the bureau of labor statistics just as a matter of yes i do wing think tank numbers so now i have some actual factual
11:42 pm
numbers on the bureau of labor that the average to be out interested just. let me speak or you want to cite your government funded pro union sisters the unions get twenty to thirty percent more per job on average than the private sector does that's happening right now and it's been going on for decades second of all their benefits are three to four times as good as private sector so don't tell me these made up numbers they get nineteen thousand a year in pensions nineteen thousand a year doesn't add up to a twenty two billion dollars shortfall as they have in places like new jersey and wisconsin and california are it's a clearly there's a little bit of debate as to whose numbers you would like to believe there are difference to take on nothing out of my head among credible economy which is why you're out of this conversation i want to ask you though do you think that this move by scott walker in wisconsin is clearly a politically motivated nor do i think it's actually awful it's not just him you know right there are other states out there ohio indiana idaho tennessee that all
11:43 pm
have this type of legislation in the works to go after public sector unions a lot of people are saying that this is an attack happening right now more of all i mean injured cuomo in new york to do the same thing that evil democrat. well you know i think it's absolutely awful on the day that the egyptian military decided to hope the egyptian people overthrew the dictatorship we see the military in this country being used to threaten the collective bargaining rights the fundamental rights of americans in trying to an international law in the constitution we see them being right where is the constitution first amendment freedom to associate as we see this we see these being threatened by a dog i mean the gentleman i love talking about buggery i think calling out the national guard because i use are never known for being thoughtless let's get something right here today i do is on the phone earlier today we still wake up over the utility workers of america who's gotten a death threat after appearing on fox news so let's get something straight about which i mean everywhere today thing which i use and which side is shooting who in this day have never been taught to be you know your idol and public sector unions
11:44 pm
are fundamentally a to gather enough you know you have no good living the gentleman has something else or something here i don't want you know and you stop would you just be quiet for a second public sector unions were such a bad idea that after your never did them they were created out of an executive order by j.f.k. they're a terrible idea because the people who pay the tab are in the negotiating room you've got the public sector unions that want to get paid here the government people that want to get elected want to get union contributions for their campaigns in the room negotiating the person who's paying the tab is the taxpayer they're not in the room and they're getting screwed what about the taxpayers that you work for you know the public folder is going to be a vote for republicans and their money gets taken and spent on democratic campaigns over and over and over and over again and they can't you think of this kind of move that i actually back versus communication workers of america allows union members that don't want their money going to political contributions up it's a slush fund if you close it and obviously it's like saying you're funding hamas but you're only supporting you are you if you're going to labor unions of hamas
11:45 pm
sometimes yes ok but are labor unions the fundamental problem that needs to go right now you don't think that perhaps i mean right if you go after the worker couldn't cause even more social political economic and rest how is it not to work there are these are public. their employees their employees their workers but they're also strip mining budgets of states across the nation the reason we're going up there going longer is because of all the obligations to the unions and again the taxpayer wasn't in the room you elected officials one of the get reelected so they sold out to these public sector unions for salaries and benefits way beyond any reasonable rational rational estimation and as a result all these governments are going on there and we the unless there's a taxpayer represented in the room there should not be public and i can live you finish it off them and then we have to wrap it up so what do you think i mean you know i'm serious here do you think that something like this is going to cause more on that people are you know socially politically economically just going to get
11:46 pm
themselves in more of a tizzy let's remember what happened the last time the national guard was called out during a strike the one nine hundred sixty eight meant for sanitation workers strike and that strike martin luther king was killed when you start threatening national guard by always regarded number by international we let me british my sentence when you start threatening violence in any form or about me violence you let me finish my sentence all you i know what i was really talking about the national guard this is some show of force right whether they want to wear what i want whenever there's any type of show of force will it always have been throughout american labor history when the national guard was called out in the thirty's they would come out it would be you know the big show of force and then vigilantes would come out and they would kill people because it's a tactical endorsement of force against union members and what you're going to see is a union leader wind up with a bullet in the head the way gabby giffords did well i certainly hope novel will see how far this plane goes in wisconsin and other states that identify and i thank you both for being here tonight thank you very much now still to come on tonight's show we have shelling to tell and then two hundred and seven days locked inside of
11:47 pm
a capsule it's a great trip to mars and that experiment taking place in russia is the return. i. please if. we. feel.
11:48 pm
are. going. to. sell lots of. we'll wear uniforms that will damage the
11:49 pm
black. but very little damming the white. and they are the key to our problems are all right. all right guys it's time for show and tell now last time we spoke about c pac and the changes that we've seen this year one of the most notable being the growing presence of libertarians of the conference which has some people up in arms so we asked if you thought that libertarians are true conservatives and here's what some you had to say melanie seale sounded off on facebook saying i consider myself a libertarian conservative i have my own moral and ethical beliefs but i feel that it is not my right or the government's right to enforce those moral beliefs marks a blow to said libertarians and rand royds just another flavor of conservative wingnut on you tube we got
11:50 pm
a response from miss mr no face he said libertarians overlap with conservatives on small government mainly after that the similarities get pretty thin now says the wall most political science teachers will tell you that libertarians aren't true conservatives and instead are mixed ideology i feel the libertarians actually have more in common with our nation's founders than today's pro-war overspending prohibitionist conservatives libertarians are the future of the conservative movement and one viewer who goes by dr ron paul responded with libertarians believe in small government conservatives believe in the military industrial complex now as always we appreciate your input on these topics and here is our next question for you we spoke about protests in egypt which ultimately led to a revolution a change in government and there are several other countries following suit right now with protests yemen buffering algeria just to name a few but what about the us are our days of revolution over so that's our question for you tonight could america ever have another revolution you can respond to us on
11:51 pm
facebook twitter and you tube and who knows your response just might make it on air . now it's the most fascinating program that hasn't happened for the past eight months a crew of volunteers have been simulating a trip taking them to mars but they've now reached an exciting milestone on this boat journey where the crew is going to finally touch down on the fake red planet r.t. correspondent sarah firth has the story. after more than eight months flying to the red planet the isolated mass five hundred crew preparing to go. before they prepare to take the steps to mars. this thing elated surface was now only three of the six are actually going to be entering here they're going to be carrying out experiments in collecting found other programs. that mars is going to be monitored for russia's real life mission
11:52 pm
control and in reality they are the crew the space ship and the planet's surface all just part of the simulated experiment one that comes complete with mock emergencies scientific experiments space and no natural light its purpose to learn more about the physical and psychological demands of the long distance space travel the head of the project tells me it's a new team perhaps to avoid any tensions and the experience itself is a tough challenge for the crew to have to deal with the monotony but thanks to this program the men are in a good condition and we hope. they will be to walk on the planet surface the crew volunteers are being paid it's a long haul experiment that still has a while to completion in fact only venda six hundred forty days after they
11:53 pm
first began that the men will get to touch down back in reality was the experiment gives a unique insight into the long term space travel techniques it will be a long while yet before the real thing until then this simulation is as close as it gets to witnessing a real mission to mars so r.t. . well today after two. hundred and fifty seven days in the locked window less steel capsule several participants in the mock mars trip don sixty six pounds suits performed a mock landing took fake samples from the ground conducted fake scientific experiments and planted the flags of russia china and the european space agency now the video footage of the landing was shown on a big screen at russia's mission control center outside of moscow and according to the deputy head of the russian space agency all systems have been working normally and the crew are feeling fine so so far so good how does experiment compare to the
11:54 pm
real thing and how long until we see that human trip to mars take place well joining me to discuss it is andrew chaikin space historian science journalist and author of a passion for mars andrew thank you so much for joining us so you're the author of a book called a passion for mars which i believe you said for years writing on how excited are you about this this simulation exercise. if you need to see people taking the whole challenge seriously and actually going through this kind of what if they exercise and i wish them well but at the same time you know anybody who gets into this knows that there is an awful lot of challenge ahead of us. that's going to take a very long time to solve before with the real thing can happen well you know this very much so supposed to be a psychological experiment too to see how these people react to spending so much time and isolated chamber with a few others but some key elements are missing which is that they aren't you know feeling weightlessness at the same time scientists have stated that they don't have
11:55 pm
the the euphoria or some of the dangers involved with the space travel how important do you think those elements are oh it's it's everything i mean you know you're going to you're going to get on board a mars ship and you're going to be away from the earth for two and a half or three years and you better have a pretty nice carrot. the other end of that ordeal right and keep in mind also that on a real mars sleigh and this is something that i think the simulation does probably touch on you won't be able to look outside and get those magnificent views of earth that astronauts get on the space station or even going to the moon because once you get more than a few hundred thousand miles away you know the earth is going to shrink down to the size of a little star and so for most of that time you're going to be looking out the window it's just going to be blackness then you get to mars and that's when the
11:56 pm
exciting part of the mission happens here you're there to explore a new world that humans have never visited to make discoveries potentially even evidence that life once existed or may get exist on mars and that's got to be a crazy intense explorer's kind of experience to keep you go and and then of course on the way home you've got that data to look at to think about to talk about and you know that every day brings you closer to home so that's the plus side now let me just give you one thing that i'm not sure of the simulation is including or not and that's the fact that when you get to mars you are so far away from earth you're at closest thirty five million miles but more often you're much further than that that your radio signals take anywhere from ten to twenty minutes just to go one way
11:57 pm
so forget about having real time conversations with anybody except the people who are on the ship with you that's going to be quite a challenge from a psychological standpoint never mind all of the medical and technical challenges that we have yet to solve well that's interesting because i do know that for now they have internet and they're allowed to communicate you know of course with the people with their families and they say that it's a little delayed and has certain disruptions on purpose that my last question because we're running out of time here is how long do you think until we see this real trip to mars. i'd say thirty years at the minimum i hope i live to see it i'll be fifty five in a few months so that would that would be just about right for me to live to see it but i'm i'm not putting any money on it it's a really big challenge and worthy of us as a species that is by nature a species of explorers well i definitely hope that you're around that i'm around also to see that exit sounds very exciting thank you so much and there for joining
11:58 pm
